Metacognitive Blog

I can’t believe we almost done with classes for this semester. Time has gone by so fast and it seem like yesterday we just started with school and now we got couple days left until school will be over. Being in TSTM 544, this class have taking me to a new different level of learning and training. The most important part about this training is working with the residents at the Heritage Lowman Home. I have gained a lot of experiences when instruction the residents at the Lowman Home and it help me to be more patient with others.

Doing an annotated bibliography research paper of “E-Learning 2.0” helped me understand why E-learning is so important to others and why is a helpful tools in this society. E-learning 2.0 is constructive tools that help people learning in a different phase and would help save time without any face-to-face interaction. I really didn’t understand what is E-learning until I did some research about it. We talked about it in TSTM444 but I didn’t really go into details. Here is one of my favorite author quotes from Stephen Downes that I like. “The challenge will not be in how to learn, but in how to use learning to create something more, to communicate.” Overall, I think this semester has been a blast and I have enjoyed the people in this class. Hopefully in the future, I will be able to use my knowledge to help others in training.

When it comes toward the end of the semester, more assignments and quizzes were given by professors. It's very difficult to keep up with all these assignment and some assignments are not turning in on time. I feel like professors are not being fair to students. It seems like I have more homework and quizzes at the end of the semester then the middle of semester. I wish professors would know how to balance the assignment and not giving the assignment all at once.

A couple of weeks ago, Chris Simpson and I presented a FaceBook at the Heritage Lowman Home. The workshop went well and the students from TSTM 343 were helping us with the workshop. The only bad thing that I didn't like about the workshop is we did not present our PowerPoint presentation. The seniors already have FaceBook account and our workshop is about creating a Facebook. The seniors were also having problem remembering their email password. Some students spent the entire workshop just to help the senior acquire their password. In my opinion, I think the person who is in charge in the workshop should write down the senior's users name or email address and their password. So the next time when others students are doing the workshop, then they wouldn't have to spend the entire time trying to figure out the password. I enjoyed working with the seniors and I hope one day I can go back there again.

As far as the project goes, Chris Simpson and I are presenting our first computer workshop on October 14, 2009 at the Heritage Lowman Home. We will present our first workshop on FaceBook and we will help the seniors set up the accounts. My role for this project is to make sure that I construct a screen shot of steps by steps pictures so the seniors can have some kind visual aid. The most difficult things about the project is our schedule. We are having a hard time meeting up because everybody is busy with classes and working but we manage to work something out. With the workshop, I hope everything goes smooth and hope that the seniors will enjoy our FaceBook presentation.

This past week has been the busiest week ever in my college year. Last week, I have a lot of homework’s and tests. I am behind with all my homework’s and needs to catch up. For some reason, I don’t understand why Professors like to give tests at the same time. Sometime, I feel like they all plan this out so they can mess with students.

Last week at the Heritage Lowman Home, I heard that the kickoff party was awesome. One of my buddies told me that the seniors were exciting that the TSTM students were there. A lot of students show up and there were some treats. I miss out the excited day and maybe I will show up for the next kickoff party.

I was going through thestate.com website and I find an article that relate to my TSTM 544 training class. The article “S.C. Employers Training Their Own” South Carolina State employers are trying to pursuit their career in the job training by the apprenticeship program. What is apprenticeship? The apprenticeship Carolina program is a combination of on-the-job training and associated classroom instruction in which workers learn the realistic and hypothetical aspects of a highly skilled pursuit. The program operates through S.C. Technical College System and helps employers find jobs without difficulty. The program started in 2007 and the number of apprentices has increased to 1,637 people in South Carolina of 2007. Last fall, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in Blythewood recruited 55 apprentices that needed employers to specialize in computer operating system called Unix. Throughout the program, forty apprentices became a Unix operator and fifteen are Oracle software developers, which is under the guidance of professionals at CSC. Most of the College undergraduate students are attending this program and most of them have been successful with their career goal. With the apprenticeship program, this is enhanced way to not rise up the percent of the unemployment but it will help increase the percent of employment. Here is the website below it and enjoy it!!

Taking evening classes has made it possible for me to manage my time wisely. During these 3 weeks, I was able to take advantage of the spare time and work in the morning. I was able to complete my module assignments on time when I'm at work. I also was able to read all the reading assignments from my classes that were assigned. This semester is going to be tough for me because of all the projects that were giving by professors and I do not have time to meet at night with my group. The most difficult thing I’ve experienced when taking evening classes is trying to stay awake. I’m used to taking classes in the morning but I guess I have to get used to it.
